i feel bad for never updating this blog. i moved to sf like a week ago and am getting settled, so i'll have something to show soon.

i guess for now i'll just copy paste from my other blog every once in a while, which is updated pretty often. it's supposed to be mostly moped stuff, but it ends up being a bit of everything. maybe i should some how merge these two? hmmmmmm.

hopefully soon i'll have myself a job and will be able to get in on rufus' box shop, then i can start working on things again. i woke up this morning craving to get my hands dirty and i had no where to work! sigh.

before making it to my block he customized someone's prius

truck dude was livid about his bumper

coppers caught him a couple blocks away. i tried to get his picture but a lady cop yelled at me, so i went home and had a bowl of franken berry. stuff's $.99 at grocery outlet!

apparently a contractor left his truck running at the construction in the alley down the street from me and this tweaker dude jumped in it and took off.
another contractor dude jumped in his truck to chase him (the white truck in the picture).

they blasted one stop sign, nearly hitting some people, which is why the stolen truck went up on the curb and took out the parking meters and prius. duder's truck wasn't handling very well after smashing the prius, and he tried to fly into the alley next to my house and that's when he hit the building.

most of this story is just what i over heard people telling the cops and news people. i saw the dude kick the window out and run away though.

ryan had a good point when he said the dude probably could have casually made a get away and nobody would have noticed but nooo FUCK DAT WATCH ME DO A BARELL ROLL

last year i was fortunate to visit the isle of man. and while it wasnt for the tt, we were there for the manxgp. i was pretty stoked cause they race the vintage bikes at this event. however last years manxgp featured my favorite rider, mr. guy martin. the race i got see him, he finished 3rd or 4th gave his bike to his pit crew, jumped the fence, cruised through throngs of fans and bolted for the toilet. i laughed.

the xr69 he was racing:

this years isle of man he ditched the sponsors on his leathers and bike and went all black and classic honda color scheme.

and on the last race of the week, the senior tt, he blew that shit up:

in the wreck, he punctured a lung and 8 weeks later was racing again.

i read somewhere that producers of snatch hired guy to "coach" brad pitt on his accent...i mean listen to this guy, hes a freaking nut!

it's finally getting there! i'm excited to ride this bike, but i feel like i'll be ready for a bigger project soon after it's done.. hmm.

as you can see, the rear end is mostly there. gotta weld in some supports and finish welding in what's there.
there's no photo of it, but i'm afraid the chain may interfere with the frame. we gotta find a new sprocket for it anyway, so hopefully we can get a smaller one and not have to worry about it. i was wanting to gear it out a bit anyway.

ok, that'll do for tonight. i'm off to san francisco tomorrow for the rest of the week, so you probably won't see much from me till i get back. later tater.

i just didn't get my deploma is all.

ryan and i made some not-very-impressive-but-highly-effective dropouts for the kawi this evening.

we also bent some metal and drilled some holes in some things, the rear end should be on the bike sometime this year.

ryan and i totally jumped into this project never have done anything like it, it's been a learning experience all the way. having never done most of the work that we're doing before, we've been kinda hesitant here and there to jump right in and start cutting and welding.. ryan found this little philosophy over on the mulligan machine blog (my new favorite blog, btws) and it totally made me feel a lot better about everything ever.

1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
3. There is no editing stage.
4. Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.
5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.

7. Once you’re done you can throw it away.
8. Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.

after putting the tire on the rim ourselves with the help of ryan's dad and ending up with a busted valve stem, we decided to let the kawasaki dealership over by his dad's house put it on for us for a cool $25. sucks having to pay someone to do something, it doesn't happen very often here, but it also sucks not having the proper tools to do a job. so now the bike's done for real!

while at ryan's dad's i also helped clean the carbs on his ct400. got it to run better but it still needs a bit o tuning and probably new gas. the thing is stock as fuu but super nice! rad paint and dorky sweeper bars. no pics for you!

so i finally had a chance this week to get over to the shop with all the parts that have come in the mail. (oh yeah the tire arrived) and it turns out the piston rings are for a piston with wider grooves.

i guess there is a difference betweeen the two parts numbers. all the kawasaki message boards have been claiming there is no difference between these two numbers. the rings we have are for the older piston.

the difference is 1mm of thickness! ugh. i managed to piss off the ebay vendor i bought them from so returning them isnt an option...whatevs. i gave that guy positive feedback! too bad he charged 10 bucks for shipping something that weighed maaaaybe 3 oz. so i didnt give him 5 stars and dude flipped. telling me, i hope you liked your purchase CAUSE THERE WONT BE ANOTHER. so looks like we're stuck with them. dean says he can sand them down. i dunno. i do know im tired.

piston and .5 over rings are here, so we can bore the cylinder and get the top end together finally.
rear brake pads are here, rear tire is on it's way.. once the carb shows up we can get the motor all wrapped up and back in the bike. i gotta get cracking on the frame and expansion chamber then we should have a mostly complete rolling bike! then i'll have to make the seat, cut and remount the rear fender (if we end up using it), collect the other bits and pieces, wire it up and ride the fucker!

ps, reno was EPIC! most fun i've had on a moped in a long time!

im done buying locally. i hope the internet swallows up all these shitty parts counters. when dean and i picked up the kawasaki initially i was thinking even though the bike is old, its going to be nice to have the option to buy some factory parts at a local shop and not have to wait for the item to be shipped. instant gratification! this has not proven to be the case...in the least. is every person hired to jockey a parts counter a certified retard? take for example a recent interaction i had at a motorcycle salvage yard out here in rancho cordova. perhaps i should give a little back story. in our attempts to do this bike on the cheap, dean and i have been searching for a used 4.00 x 18 rear tire. i found the guy behind the counter at sacramento motorcycle dismantlers to be very impatient and kept interupting me before i could get out my full question. turns out they didnt have a tire size i was looking for or didnt want to pull one off a bike. fine whatever. i did happen to notice they carried new EBC brake shoes, so today i called after looking up the EBC catalouge on the internet. where at the end of the catalouge ALL THE SHOES THEY OFFER ARE LISTED BY SIZE AND EVEN A DRAWING OF SHOE DESIGN. every kawasaki shop employee ive talked to insisted on having the year and model bike even though they all had the same EBC catalouge i found on the internet with a size listing.

my phone conversation with the jerk from the salvage yard (some liberties were taken with the cursing, but are used to show my tone):

I HAVE THE MANUFACTURE PARTS NUMBER.
"okay..hmm"
"nothings coming up"
"what kind of bike is this again?"
IT DOESNT FUCKING MATTER YOU HAVE THE PART NUMBER.

ryan picked up the metal for the rear end today, i added another 66.6mm to the swing arm (we are much happier with the length now), ryan hack sawed a lot on a chunk of aluminum and i cut a bunch of metal out of the frame.
a couple pictures-

here i am sitting on it after lengthening the swing arm again, it's such a small bike

there it sits at the end of the day. i'm thinking about reusing the top bars as the seat stays, cutting a wedge out of them up where they intersect with the rest of the frame and bending them down to meet the drop outs. i'll have to make some bends in them some how to make them wider and i'll have to add some tube steel at the ends to make them long enough.. i also gotta cut a lot of junk off them to clean them up if i go that rout. i may just hack them off all together and make new seat stays, who knows.

anyway, more tomorrow. maybe.

i made some barz to clear the fork tubes on the kawasaki, pretty straight forward and simple. oh, and ugly!

i also stretched the swing arm by 66.6mm. won't be using the swing arm, but i figured that this was the best way to go about building my own rigid rear end.. use the swing arm as a jig and build the rear end around it? hell if i know, i've never done this before! it's my first tiiiime!

once i get some tubing to do the rear end, i'll chop that rear triangle out of there for good. for now it keeps the bike from folding in on it's self, ha!

not sure if 66.6mm is going to be long enough of a stretch, i think that's about 2.5" or so. my dad (old time chopper builder, doing this shit before most of the kids these days ever sat on their first 2 wheeler) said most of the bikes he did back when were 3", so maybe i'll do another half inch or so. who knows, maybe i won't.

i'm having fun with this, i'm tired of reading everyone else's cicle blogs and watching them have all the fun chopping things up! if you monkeys can do it, i can too! right?

anywho we lost to an inferior team and as a result i needed to blow off some steam. this slab of aluminum proved to be the perfect candidate to receive my wrath.

so to protect this wet bit of transmision we needed to make a cover. cause of the rotary valve this thing has a weird carb placement. the air inlet comes through the behind the cylinder but the carb is positioned right of the transmission. it would have been a pain in the ass to try and tune the new carb and having to take cover off everytime.

dean wanted to hack the existing cover but i have an idea for that. so i decided to make my own.

i tried a mill. i tried a chop saw.

i settled on a hacksaw.

now my arm hurts and i still got two more cuts to make. my friend used to have a personalized license plate he ordered and once it arrived he really hated it. his license plate read... ANTHA TM (anutha time). if he were a character in a sitcom, it would have been his catch phrase. he ended up driving around with his stockton auto center plates till they were sunfaded.

a couple weeks ago ryan and i went and picked up two old kawasaki motorcycles. one is a 74 100cc dirt bike missing just about everything and a motor full of rust, the other is a 62 120 tr scrambler.

we got the 74 for a dollar (actually, ryan gave the guy his unlucky $2 bill) and the 62 for $50, both from different dudes in the same town.

the 120 tr is super rad! old school rotary valve two stroke awesomeness! complete bike and i'm making it road worthy again with the help of ryan.

for being nearly 40 years old, the bike is in great shape. the tank has minimal rust on the inside and is totally useable, everything is there and ready to be either somewhat restored or thrown out.

sorry for the horrible picture, i'll take better ones eventually.

so far we've gotten the motor off and after a bunch of bashing i was able to get the piston out of the cylinder. the piston is toast and we're in search of a replacement.

in the meantime i dug into the clutch and found that there was a little oil still in there and it pretty well preserved everything! after some pb blaster to free up the shifter that was seized in the side cover (but not in the transmission) i was able to get it to cycle through the gears in both directions. that's right, it's a rotary transmission, meaning you can kick up to first from fourth or down to fourth from first. weeeird!

for some reason i neglected to take any pictures really.. i got a couple of me making a paper bag gasket for the clutch cover;

and a couple of my solution to the completely rusted away ignition;

puch points ignition! it just so happens the flywheel taper is the same as a puch moped.

ryan donated a nearly new e50 stator and flywheel and i took the stock stator plate to the mill to flatten it and make some countersinks to make it sit deeper into the motor. then i drilled and tapped a couple holes and there you have it, a puch stator adapter ring.

i swapped out the e50 flywheel for one from a za50 because the motor spins counterclockwise and that's that.

the first of many moped parts to go into this motorcycle, i'm sure.

we'll have to wait until we get our hands on a piston to actually time it, and we're going to most likely forgo the woodruff key (unless we are lucky enough to have it line up exactly where it needs to with the crank!) and just rely on the taper fit and some red locktite to keep everything down.

i'll run the headlight, tail light and brake light from the puch lighting coil, use one of the aux coils to power the horn and the other to power the neutral dummy light. the bike is much older than 71, so that means we don't gotta deal with turn signals. sweeeet!

once we get it back up and going we'll probably just ride it around town for a while and then see if we can't make our fifty bucks plus whatever other investment back from it.

or, who knows?
